You could have called this game "Bird vs. Camel" and no one would have argued with you

Here's a list of the differences between the Japanese and English versions of the Pokémon anime. Why? Because I thought people might be interested, and because I'm bored. I'm only focussing on the original series here, so everything before Advanced Generation. First, name changes: Satoshi became Ash Ketchum. Shigeru Orchid became Gary Oak. Orchid-hakase (lit. Professor Orchid) became Professor Oak. Kasumi became Misty (like in the games). Takeshi became Brock (ditto). Musashi and Kojirō became Jessie and James. Nyarth became Meowth. Rocket-dan (lit. the Rocket Gang) was renamed to Team Rocket. Kosaburō and Yamato became Butch and Cassidy. Sakaki became Giovanni (again, like in the games) Most of the town names are just translations (i.e. Tokiwa City, literally "tree-coloured city", became Viridian City, viridian being a shade of green). Nurse Joy's name was unchanged (though she was just called Joy or Joy-san in the original). Junsar became Off...

And magic makes it all complete

More pointless trivia about My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic . Fun drinking game: Take a shot every time I use the word "originally" or "original" in this post. Rarity was originally going to be the Element of Inspiration, but the writers thought the concept might be too hard for little kids to understand, so she was changed to being the Element of Generosity instead. The show was originally going to be called My Little Pony Adventures . The show's concept began when Lauren Faust pitched an idea for an original show based on her dolls called Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls . Rarity was originally going to be a fan of dressage (a real-life type of horse performance where the horse and rider go through a series of complicated and practiced moves), which was supposed to be an Equestrian version of dancing. Sweet Apple Acres was originally going to be called Big Apple Orchard or Big Apple Farm, and would have been located in Fillydelphia rather than Pony...

So far away, but still so near

It's time for (some pointless trivia about) Animaniacs! Animaniacs! (yes, the exclamation point is part of the title) was initially conceived as a spin-off to Tiny Toon Adventures called Plucky Duck Adventures, starring Plucky Duck, the character from the aforementioned show, before it was decided to make it into an original show instead. When starting out, the main characters were originally three green duck brothers (similar in design to Plucky Duck). There was Yakky, the talkative one who wore a bow-tie, Smakky, the ill-tempered and violent one who always carried a large mallet, and Wakky, the eccentric and weird one. As the development process continued, a fourth, female duck (who was not named in concept art) was introduced. After their designs changed from ducks to anthropomorphic dogs, the characters morphed into what they are now. Yakky essentially became Yakko, with the only change being swapping the bow tie for a pair of brown slacks. Wakko inherited Wakky's perso...

Yes, we're the super powers!

Pointless trivia about Final Fantasy. Mostly VII, IX and X. Final Fantasy X originally didn't begin as a Final Fantasy game at all. The initial concept was for an independent game called Seventeen, a science fiction game about a virus that kills people on their 18th birthday. The main character, a doctor/priestess, travels the world handing out vaccines for the disease under the employ of a pharmaceutical company/cult. It would later be revealed that the vaccines were actually causing the disease, and the company was using this to control the population. When the plot was reworked into a Final Fantasy game, the virus was changed to a monster, the pharmaceutical company was changed to a corrupt church and the doctor/priestess was changed to a summoner on a religious pilgrimage. Tidus's Japanese name is Tida, which in the Ainu language means "sun". Yuna's name means "moon" and Wakka's name means "water". This is why Tidus and Yuna's C...

Music brings light

So I decided to list all the special attacks used by Disney characters in Kingdom Hearts II and see if I could find any connection between them and the movies they come from. Note that I'm going by both names of attacks and what the attacks themselves actually look like, if possible. Mulan Origin movie: Mulan Attacks: Mushu Fire - Mushu attacks nearby enemies by breathing fire. Flametongue - Rushes in and attacks enemies in midair while engulfed in Mushu's fire. Limit: Dragonblaze ( Red Shot > Flametongue/Heat Lance > Red Meteor) Explanation: Mushu seems to do most (if not all) of the special attacks, and being that he's a MIGHTY FIRE-BREATHING DRAGON, they're all based around fire. The fact that Mulan is willing or able to let Mushu engulf her in fire to attack is probably a sign of the trust/bond those two share. Beast Origin movie: Beauty and the Beast Attacks: Furious Bellow - Knocks down nearby enemies with enraged shouts. Ferocious Lunge - Att...

Ring your bell and raise your song!

Been a while since I've done a pointless trivia, hasn't it? This time, I'll be covering everyone's favourite limbless wonder, Rayman. The original concept for Rayman was that he was a ten-year-old boy named Jimmy, who got sucked into Hereitscool, a world he created in his computer. It was probably a good thing they didn't go ahead with that idea. Despite his iconic limbless nature, Rayman was originally designed with proper limbs. They were removed to make the character easier to animate, and the design just stuck from then on. The main reason for the first game's infamous difficulty was that it was never playtested. Luckily, Ubisoft learned from their mistakes, and the next games in the series (as well as the first game's remake of sorts, Rayman Origins ) were more balanced in terms of difficulty. In the original version of the first game on the Atari Jaguar, the two mosquito bosses, Bzzit and Moskito, had an identical appearance, leaving many playe...

Don't let me die here... There must be something more!

Debunking Harry Potter rumours. I know I've said most of this already on this blog before, but no one reads this so I doubt anyone will notice. Myth: Rowling said she regretted pairing Ron and Hermione, and admitted that Harry and Hermione would have made more sense. Truth: Rowling said that Harry and Hermione are in some ways a better fit than Ron and Hermione, but also pointed out that there are many ways in which Ron and Hermione make a good couple too (e.g. he's funny and therefore a good contrast to Hermione's more serious personality). She said she imagined that Ron and Hermione would need some marriage counselling at first, but that they would be alright in the end. Myth: Rowling called Harry/Hermione shippers delusional. Truth: The interviewer (from Harry Potter fansite Mugglenet) called them delusional, and Rowling's response was to laugh and say "Well, no, I wouldn't say that!" before steering the conversation towards more neutral ground. ...
