Crazy, keep on driving!

I'm gonna do a post listing the differences between the Japanese and English versions of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, just because. This is only important and general differences, not every single minute difference between the Japanese and English dubs. The first season of Yu-Gi-Oh! that aired outside of Japan is titled Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters in Japan, but simply Yu-Gi-Oh! elsewhere. In Japan, this is to differentiate it from the previous anime, which was simply titled Yu-Gi-Oh! and made by a different company, which was never dubbed. English speaking fans often refer to this anime as "Season Zero". First, name changes. Yugi Muto kept his name, but the pronunciation of his last name was changed from "moo-toh" to "moh-toh" for some reason. Yami no Yugi (literally "Dark Yugi") became Yami Yugi, with "Yami" being treated as his actual name for a while. Katsuya Jyonouchi became Joey Wheeler. Mazaki Anzu became Tea Gardner. Hirot...

Fansubbing tips: How to translate common Japanese phrases more naturally/less literally A lot of anime contains some common phrases which fansubbers are taken to translating extremely literally, which often makes them sound almost nothing like what a native English speaker would say. So I'm here to offer some alternative solutions to make your subs easier to read. "Sasuga (name) desu..." Often literally translated as "As expected from (name)", but that feels a little awkward to me. Depending on the context and who's talking, you could have various things including "That's our (name)", "That's (name) for you", etc. If you want to keep the "expected", you could have "I expected nothing less from (name)". "Jibun de kimeru na!" Literally "Don't decide that on your own/by yourself!" Which works sometimes, but feels a little too "stiff" to me. Personally I'd have it as ...

Why not take a quick break, then come back for more?

So, in the video game Cuphead , whenever you lose to a boss (which you probably will many, many times), you get a pithy little "defeat quote" from the boss themselves, mocking you for your failure. So I decided to take that and put my own spin on it, and give you what I think my own characters might say if they were Cuphead bosses. I'm only coming up with one quote per character, even though bosses in Cuphead have a different quote for each form/stage of the fight, because everyone knows I'm not creative enough to think of more than one line per character. Also, most of the Cuphead boss quotes rhyme, but I'm not doing that either because 1. Rhymes are hard to do, and 2. Most of my characters don't rhyme either. With that said, let's do this. Jutah Tetra - "I've heard enough out of you. Now stay quiet!" Keyakku Tetra - "You played with the fire, and you got burned." Ketana Akira - "Huh? I-I won? Umm... d-don't be ...

Today, in the Year of Our Lord, 2005...

Before I get into the main subject of this post, let me preface by stating I am not a Christian, nor do I practise any specific religion (I kind of don't like the concept of religion in general). My beliefs in the divine tend to fall somewhere between agnostic and pantheistic, in that I do believe in gods (yes, plural) and divine powers, but I don't worship them or live my life by any religious doctrine. That said, there are many things people misinterpret about religion, particularly Christianity, and you know how much I love debunking common misconceptions, so that's what I'm going to be doing in this post. I apologise ahead of time if anything I say here offends your sensibilities or beliefs, since I know religion is a touchy subject for most, but just know that nothing I say here is intended to be taken as derogatory or insulting, merely informative. Without further ado, let's get into it. (Another cautionary note: When it comes to quotations from the Bible,...

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

This time, I'm gonna do a pointless trivia about my favourite movie of all time, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World . And a little about the comic too. Scott Pilgrim is named after the song of the same name by the band Plumtree. In one scene in the movie, Scott wears a T-shirt with the logo of Plumtree's album Mass Teen Fainting , which the song "Scott Pilgrim" appears on. In the comic, Ramona is said to change her hair colour every month. In the movie, she changes it every week and a half. When the movie was screened for the first time, two alternate endings were shown - one where Scott gets back with Knives and another where Scott gets together with Ramona. Audiences vastly preferred the Ramona ending, so that became the "true" ending to the movie. Originally, the final battle in the movie would have had Gideon transforming into a giant mecha, which Scott, Ramona and Knives would have teamed up to destroy. It was cut for time. Another ending idea, which...
