All we need is Drive!
Pointless trivia time again. This time, we'll be covering Undertale.
WARNING: If you plan to play Undertale, and haven't already done so, I strongly suggest not reading this blog post until you've played it (not that anyone reads this blog anyway). Having played it myself, I can confirm that Undertale really is one of those games that's best played completely blind - i.e. with no prior knowledge of the game whatsoever. Go buy it on Steam, play it, then come back and read this. Okay?
Okay, now that they're all gone, let's get on with the trivia.
Muffet, Glyde and So Sorry were all designed by Kickstarter backers. So Sorry's backer paid $1000 for his character to be included in the game.
Glyde and So Sorry are hidden encounters. To find Glyde, go to the room with the mysterious door in Snowdin and walk non-stop for three minutes to encounter him. You can make this easier by holding a direction, then Alt-Tabbing to a different window, causing your character to walk in place. Note: This must be done before defeating Papyrus. To find So Sorry, after defeating Mettaton EX, go to the room where you find the Stained Apron in Hotland (it's on the second floor) and set your computer calendar and clock to October 10, 8 p.m. Go up from this room to come to a hidden walkway, which leads to a hidden room. Read the sign here to battle So Sorry. Note that, contrary to popular belief, killing So Sorry DOES impact a pacifist run.
If you have a Spider Donut or Spider Cider from the Ruins, you can use it in the battle with Muffet to end the battle instantly. If you manage to buy one from her own bakesale (which cost 9999G each), she won't even take you into the battle screen.
All battles with dog-related enemies can be ended instantly by using the Stick.
In the True Pacifist ending credits, some monsters' names will appear yellow. While most of the monsters merely need to be Spared in order to appear yellow, others require specific methods. Here is a list of all monsters that have specific "befriending" methods, and what you need to do in order to "befriend" them. Note that you only need to do these actions once per monster.
Whimsun - Console
Moldsmal - Flirt, then Spare. Doing this also gets you Gold from the fight.
Icecap - Ignore twice, Steal, Compliment
Gyftrot - Undecorate three times, Gift
Mad Dummy - Talk at least once during the battle
Aaron - Go to Napstablook's house in Waterfall and play a song. Leave while the song is still playing and get into a battle to encounter a scene with Aaron and Woshu. Note: If you do this, then whenever you encounter Aaron in future, you can choose Shoo to make him go away instantly.
Shyren - Keep choosing Hum until the encounter ends automatically. Note: If you do this, then when you later encounter Knight Knight, you can put her to sleep with two turns of Sing instead of four.
Lesser Dog - Keep choosing Pet until Lesser Dog stops attacking.
To get to the Temmie Village, go to the bottom right of the room where you light up mushrooms to reveal your path in Waterfall (after all the mushrooms are lit up). The Temshop is the only place in the whole game where you can sell things. If you buy the item that lets Tem go to college, you unlock the Temmie Armor, the best armour in the whole game. Note: An easy way to get fast money is to go to Gerson (the old turtle that lives in Waterfall) and buy as many Cloudy Glasses as you can, then go back to Temmie Village and sell them all for a profit. If Tem says "I gotta have that!", you can refuse her first offer to make her increase her offer. Refusing her offer a second time will make her say "You will regret this." in perfect English. However, doing this does NOT make all Temmies kill you in one hit, contrary again to rumour.
In order to get Gold from the Temmie fights, you need to choose Flex to make Aaron show up, then Flex again to get rid of him. Temmies can also be spared by either choosing Talk or Feed Temmie Flakes (if you have any), but doing so gets you no Gold.
Temmies are named after the art director of the game, Temmie Chang. She has stated on her Twitter that she dislikes Temmie porn and will most likely interfere with any blog focussed on it, though she won't stop people from drawing it. She has also requested that any Temmie porn be tagged "Temmoi". Similarly, Toby Fox himself has asked that people drawing Rule 34 art of Undertale tag it #undertail, so people looking for fanart of the game don't accidentally stumble upon it.
The voice clip of Flowey saying "That's a wonderful idea!" during the Genocide run is a distorted clip of Bugs Bunny.
The Annoying Dog is the author avatar of Toby Fox himself.
Papyrus and sans are both named after fonts (or font families in sans's case, though his text box does use the Comic Sans font).
Tips for increasing the ratings in Mettaton EX's battle:
- Using the Stick greatly increases ratings, but only once.
- Changing armour in battle greatly increases ratings once for each armour.
- During the essay question, typing "legs" gets the highest bonus.
- "Pose" gets a massive bonus when your HP is very low.
- Eating MTT-brand food increases ratings, though the bonus gets lower as you eat the same type of food.
- Choose "Boast" before the breaktime attack to get your ratings up a lot.
Mettaton EX has responses for "sexy", "foxy" and "tantalizing", but it's impossible to see what they are because the X and Z keys end the attack immediately.
Contrary to popular belief, there is no way to get a Temmie ending. This was most likely caused by confusion about the actual Dog ending. The small white dog is actually the Annoying Dog, not Temmie.
Flowey's final form as the last boss of the Neutral run is often called Omega Flowey or God Flowey by fans. In the game, during the actual battle he is just identified as Flowey, and in the credits of the True Pacifist run he is listed as Photoshop Flowey.
The character's real name is Frisk. Entering this name as your character's name will activate Hard Mode, letting you play up to the end of the Ruins.
