It takes a special kind of perfection
Guess what? I'm doing more pointless trivia about Undertale. Hey, no one reads this blog anyway, I can post what I like.
Naming yourself Chara only disables your ability to reset the game (aside from True Reset). It does not disable your ability to rename after a reset - you don't have that ability in the first place, unless you name yourself Frisk, and that's just to prevent you from being stuck in Hard Mode.
In the battle against Asriel, choosing the ACT command "Dream" fills up your inventory with items called LastDream. If you finish the battle with one still in your inventory, then you can examine them to see that they have a description, and can sell them for a high price at Temmie Village.
In beta versions of Undertale, the ACT and MERCY buttons were originally labelled TALK and SPARE respectively. Early screenshots also show a SPELL button, indicating that you might have originally been able to learn magic spells.
There was originally going to be another pair of Royal Guards, a female pair based on a cat and a bug named RG 03 and RG 04, which would appear instead of RG 01 and RG 02 depending on what day of the week it was. Similiar to the pacifist solution for RG 01 and RG 02 being to get them to confess their love for each other, the pacifist solution for RG 03 and RG 04 was going to be getting them to make up after an argument and become friends again.
Alphys was originally going to be male, but Toby didn't like the way the design looked, so he added on eyelashes and made her female.
The official Toriel plush has a heart/SOUL hidden inside it. The only way to see it is to cut the plush open.
It's possible that you would have originally been able to date Mettaton. The Undertale Kickstarter campaign says "Seriously, you can literally have a robot husband", most likely referring to Mettaton. In addition, there are seven variations of the main menu theme, but only six are actually used in the game. The missing one is the sixth one, which is found between the "Alphys" and "Pacifist Ending" versions, implying the missing one was meant to be used for Alphys, and a different friendly character - possibly Mettaton - would have used the fifth one instead. It's not used because it's not possible to befriend Mettaton in the game, since he's out of commission after his battle until the True Pacifist ending.
The demo has a few instances of text and files referring to a "Grandpa Semi". This, with the addition of semi-serif fonts in the demo, might indicate that there was originally going to be a third skeleton.
There's a rumour that So Sorry (the hidden secret boss) and Jerry can be killed without hampering a Pacifist run. This isn't true, though neither has to be killed for a Genocide run, and So Sorry actually can't be encountered on a Genocide run.
People sometimes quote Flowey's line if you choose to kill him at the end of a Neutral run as "I KNEW YOU HAD IT IN YOU." (in capital letters with a full stop at the end). It's actually in mixed case with an exclamation point: "I knew you had it in you!"
Asriel never tells Frisk not to trust himself-as-Flowey if they meet again. He just says to think of Flowey as a different person from him.
The name of the tune that plays during the battle with Sans is spelled MEGALOVANIA (all caps) in the soundtrack, though the spellings Megalovania and MeGaLoVania are sometimes used by fans.
Similarly, the name of the game has been spelled as UNDERTALE (matching its logo) and UnderTale, but it's now officially just Undertale.
In the demo, it's possible to get partial EXP by lowering a monster's health and then sparing it. Since this would undermine a Pacifist run and could probably be considered cheating, this was removed from the final game. It also wouldn't make sense because EXP stands for EXecution Points, so getting them for not killing wouldn't fit. However, the demo manual refers to them as "Ex. Points", which means either Toby didn't realise how it wouldn't work or originally had a different "ex" word in mind.
In the demo, using the Devour command on a Vegetoid counted as killing it, since you ate the whole thing. In the final game, you only take a bite out of it, and it counts as ending the battle non-lethally.
The worst of the Neutral endings (the "Leaderless" ending) only requires you to kill all the bosses and a number of normal enemies (though not enough to trigger Genocide). It doesn't require never touching the MERCY button. The game actually doesn't keep track of whether you touched the MERCY button or not, only whom you did and didn't kill and how many normal monsters you killed. Similarly, sparing random encounters does not instantly end a Genocide run, unless they were one of the unique monsters that you only get one shot at (like Shyren). The alternate name of "No Mercy" for a Genocide run is non-indicative, because you can use the MERCY button and still complete a Genocide run.
Toby had to personally deny rumours that he based Papyrus's personality on a YouTuber known as Octopimp after a wiki erroneously reported that he had.
Toby made a joke/troll post on a friend's forum at one point stating that Undertale began as an EarthBound ROM hack, complete with screenshots showing above-SNES-level graphics and music that was, again, above the level of sound quality an SNES game could have. Despite this, fans still took it seriously, so much so that again Toby had to post on his Twitter clarifying that it was, in fact, a joke. (This is not to be confused with the EarthBound Halloween Hack, which Toby did actually make and a few elements of which were used in Undertale, like the Amalgamates.)
The instruction manual for the demo changes depending on how you play the demo. If you do a Genocide run of the demo, every page of the manual is black except for the Undertale logo and red text saying "That was fun. Let's finish the job." except for the final page, which is black and has a picture of Flowey with his face missing.
Originally, Mettaton would literally save your responses for future reference - as in, save them to your hard drive. The concept was cut for being buggy.
There's an unused Toriel sprite in the game files labelled "spr_torielsuicide_0" (or something along those lines), indicating she might have originally committed suicide after the battle with her in the game. It was likely cut for being too dark so early in the game, but the concept was pushed onto Asgore, if you try to spare him after having killed Flowey previously.
Speaking of which, Toriel is responsible for the game being the way it is. Originally, the player was planned to have to kill Toriel to advance, but when Toby was writing the character, he felt like killing her was wrong, and rewriting the story to let her live gave him the idea to make this an RPG where no one has to die.
Papyrus was originally going to be quite mean-spirited, with no redeeming qualities about him, and wear a fedora. Sans would have worn a visor hat and told a lot more bone-related puns.
Originally there was going to be an Easter egg-type thing where if you somehow managed to beat Asgore in one hit, Flowey would show up, dumbfounded, announce that you won, then leave while silly music played.
A lot of fans seem to believe that Sans remembers previous timelines like Flowey or your character does. He doesn't. What makes Sans different from the others is that he knows the previous timelines exist, and can make very specific guesses based on your behaviour and expression as to what you've been doing in previous timelines. It's implied that he might have the ability to save physical objects from previous timelines, judging by his secret room, but that's less definitive.
One particular ending, dubbed the "Queen Alphys" ending, confused fans for a while as to what triggered it - specifically, what makes Mettaton NEO give his "You're not completely evil" speech after killing him instead of saying that you don't want to join his fan club. The actual trigger is stopping a Genocide run in Hotland/Core (i.e. not killing everyone in Hotland/Core before challenging Mettaton), but other methods such as trying to spare Mettaton NEO, missing attacks or fooling around for a few turns, or attacking Mettaton NEO and not getting a near-perfect hit have also been tried.
There's a trend on Tumblr to make mock-screenshots of the game and post them as "newly-discovered secrets" to fool the game fans. These include: hidden shop interfaces for Grillby and Sans, a hidden boss fight against Grillby in a Genocide run, Muffet webbing up Sans and you having to cut him free, the whole game turning into an abridged Cave Story reference if you name the fallen child "Quote", and many more. (Toby is a fan of Cave Story and took inspiration for the design of Toriel from the Mimigas from that game, but that's it.)
