You're lucky star!

(No, the post title isn't a typo)

Since often Super Sentai show names are untranslated, I figured I'd take this time to explain to you what they really mean, in case you were wondering. "Sentai" means "taskforce" or "fighting squadron".

Himitsu Sentai Gorenger - "Himitsu" means "secret". "Go" means "five" (referring to the five members) and is also a pun on the English word "Go!"

J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai - "J.A.K.Q." are the initials of the team members' codenames - (Dia) Jack, (Spade) Ace, (Clover) King and (Heart) Queen. Dengekitai means "Blitzkrieg Squad", a combination of "Dengeki" (electric) and "Sentai" (squadron).

Battle Fever J - J stands for Japan. All the members are named after countries or races.

Denshi Sentai Denziman - "Denshi" means "electron", and "denzi" is an alternate spelling of "denji-", which is a prefix meaning "electric".

Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan - "Taiyo" means "sun".

Dai Sentai Goggle-V - "Dai" means "great" or "large". The V is the Roman numeral for five, again referencing the five members.

Kagaku Sentai Dynaman - "Dyna" is short for "dynamite", so I'm guessing "kagaku" means "explosive" or something.

Choudenshi Bioman - "Choudenshi" means "super-electron". "Bio" is short for "bionic".

Dengeki Sentai Changeman - "Dengeki" means "blitz" or "blitzkrieg".

Choushinsei Flashman - "Choushinsei" means "supernova".

Hikari Sentai Maskman - "Hikari" means "light".

Choujuu Sentai Liveman - "Choujuu" roughly means "super beast". "Live" is pronounced to rhyme with "five". I have no idea what it has to do with them though.

Kousoku Sentai Turboranger - I uh, have no idea what "kousoku" means. Sorry.

Chikyu Sentai Fiveman -"Chikyu" means "Earth" (as in the planet). The "Five" in the name again refers to the five members.

Chōjin Sentai Jetman - "Chōjin" means roughly "Superhuman". The "Jet" is because they can fly, and because they're trendy, or "jetsetters".

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger - "Kyōryū" means "dinosaur". In Japanese pronunciation, "Zyu" is pronounced "Juu", which is a word meaning "beast".

Gosei Sentai Dairanger - "Gosei" means "five stars". "Dai" again means "great" or "big".

Ninja Sentai Kakuranger - I have no idea what "kaku" means, I'm afraid. Possibly something to do with ninja. It could be from "kakugo", which means roughly "Prepare yourself" (and is something a ninja in pop culture would stereotypically say before unleashing a secret technique or something).

Chouriki Sentai Ohranger - "Chouriki" means "super power". "Oh" is an alternate spelling of "Ou", Japanese for "king".

Gekisou Sentai Carranger - "Gekisou" means "racing" if I remember correctly.

Denji Sentai Megaranger - Again, "denji" means "electric".

Seijuu Sentai Gingaman - "Seijuu" is roughly "star beast". "Ginga" means "galaxy".

Kyuukyuu Sentai GoGoFive - "Kyuukyuu" is from"kyuukyuusha", meaning "ambulance". "GoGoFive" is a pun on the Japanese word for "five" being "go" and the English phrase "Go, go!" (which is often heard during an emergency dispatch). Again, the "five" is in reference to there being five members.

Mirai Sentai Timeranger - "Mirai" means "future". Fitting, since all the members but one are from the future.

Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger - "Hyakujuu" means "hundred beasts". "Gao" is the Japanese sound of an animal roaring.

Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger - "Ninpuu" means "ninja wind" (a combination of "ninja" and "shippuu", meaning something like "cyclone").

Bakuryū Sentai Abaranger - "Bakuryū" is a combination of "bakuhatsu", meaning "explosion", and "kyōryū", meaning "dinosaur". (At least one sub translated it as "Dynasaur", a play on "dynamite" and "dinosaur".) "Abaranger" comes from "abare", meaning "to rampage".

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger - I'm not sure what "tokusou" means, but it might be something like "special ops". As for "Deka", I have no idea, but it could possibly be related to "dekai" meaning "huge". I somehow doubt it though.

Mahou Sentai Magiranger - "Mahou" means "magic", and "magi" is the plural form of "magus" (and also short for "magic").

GoGo Sentai Boukenger - "GoGo" is just like "Go, go!" or refers to how the team is always on the move. "Bouken" means "adventure".

Juken Sentai Gekiranger - "Juken" means "Beast Fist" and is the name of the fictional martial art that the Gekirangers use. "Geki" means "fighting spirit".

Engine Sentai Go-onger - "Engine" is an English word, but is also a pun - it's pronounced "enjin" in Japanese, which can also mean roughly "fire spirit" ("jin" as in the Arabic word "djinn", powerful spirits from Arabic folklore). "Go-on" means... well, "go on".

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger - Samurai are traditionally vassals who fight for a lord. "Shinken" means "serious".

Tensou Sentai Goseiger - I'm not sure what tensou means, but given that they're angels, it might have something to do with "ten" meaning "heaven". It's also what they say when they activate a card to use their powers or transform. "Gosei" means "five stars".

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger - "Kaizoku" means "pirate" (the noun, not the verb). "Gokai" means "exciting" or "thrilling".

Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters - Again, "Tokumei" probably means something like "special operatives".

Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger - "Zyu" is again from "juu", meaning "beast", but I'm not sure about "den". The Zyuden are the bullet-like cylinders that the Kyoryugers load into their weapons to transform and use abilities, so it might mean something like "bullet". And again, "kyoryu" means "dinosaur".

Ressha Sentai ToQger - "Ressha" means "train". "ToQ" is pronounced "Tokkyuu", which means "express train".

Shuriken Sentai Ninninger - A shuriken is a common ninja weapon, also known as a ninja star or a throwing star. "Ninnin" is a take-off of the chant "Nin nin nin!", which pop-culture ninja occasionally use (and which the transformation device chants when they transform). It's obviously from the word "ninja" itself.

Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger - "Doubutsu" means "animal", and "zyu" is from "juu" meaning "beast". "Oh" is pronounced like "Ou", meaning "king", so "Zyuoh" means "Beast King".

Uchu Sentai Kyuranger - "Uchu" means "space". "Kyu" means "nine" - this is the first Sentai to have nine regular members.
