Pokémon Red Glitch Guide - How to Get a Level 100 Gengar Before Fighting Brock
Note: This trick only works in the original Red and Blue versions, not the remakes. This works on both a normal game cartridge and a ROM, and doesn't require any external cheat devices. Also, unlike the Missingno. glitch, there's no danger of messing up your cartridge with this glitch, so rest easy. Here are the steps to perform this glitch.
1. Make sure you only have one Pokémon in your party. If you have any others, put them in the PC. Pick Charmander as your starter (yes, this is actually necessary).
2. Play through the game normally until you get to Viridian Forest. DO NOT GO TO VICTORY ROAD. (Optional but highly recommended: Level up your Charmander to around level 10.) Also, buy a bunch of Poké Balls at the Pokémon Mart.
3. Once you're at Viridian Forest, go to the last trainer (a Bug Catcher) just before the exit to Pewter City. Don't fight him yet. Get your sole Pokémon poisoned, probably by a Weedle.
4. Save just before stepping in front of the trainer. What you want to do is have a wild Pokémon encounter on the square just in front of him, so keep reloading and retrying until you get it. It might take a LOT of tries, so be patient, and don't worry, it will work eventually. It might seem like it's not going to work, but it will, trust me.
5. When you finally get the encounter, lose due to poison and you'll black out. As the screen goes black, you'll see the ! that appears over the trainer's head briefly. If you see this, it means the glitch is working.
6. When you wake up (probably in Viridian City), go to Victory Road and fight your rival. Beat his first Pokémon, then Growl at his Squirtle (this is why you had to pick Charmander as your starter, since you need your rival to have a Squirtle for this to work) to lower its attack six times. (You need to specifically lower its attack six times, not just Growl six times, so if you get the message saying "But, it failed!" when you use Growl, then it doesn't count.) After that, either beat the Squirtle or lose to it.
7. Back in Viridian City (or wherever), save and then go back to Viridian Forest. As soon as you enter, you'll get a message, and then enter a battle with a level 1 Gengar. Catch it (when I did this, I managed to catch it just by throwing a Poké Ball at it, with its health still full).
8. When you look at the EXP required to level up for the Gengar, it'll seem to be a ridiculously high number, but it's actually a negative value. If you get it fewer than 59 XP in a battle (so basically any wild Pokémon battle in Viridian Forest), it'll level up - straight to level 100! Put it in the first slot in your party and say goodbye to any challenge for the rest of the game!
Why does this glitch work? Well, the Pokémon encountered via the glitch is determined by the Special stat of the last Pokémon you fought. Your rival Green's (I use original Japanese names whenever possible) Squirtle's Special stat is the right value for Gengar to appear (this is why you need to pick Charmander as your starter if you want a Gengar, since you need your rival to have a Squirtle). The level of the Pokémon you encounter is determined by the Attack stat of the Pokémon you last fought. Green's Squirtle has an Attack of 7, so lowering it six times gives 1, hence encountering a level 1 Gengar.
So now you've got your level 100 Gengar. But I know you, one overpowered Pokémon isn't enough. So I'm gonna show you how to get, not just a level 100 Pokémon, but a level 100 Mew. That's right, there is a working, legitimate glitch to get a level 100 Mew, the mythical Pokémon that until now was only available through events and cheat devices. If you're wondering why Mew is awesome, it's because it can learn ANY move through TM or HM - any move at all. So how do you get one? Well...
1. Catch an Abra, which can be found on Route 24 near Nugget Bridge.
2. Now here's the tricky part - you need to find a trainer who, when you walk towards them, will notice you as soon as they come on screen. There's one on Route 24, in the narrow vertical grass patch just to the left after Nugget Bridge. Walk towards them, then as soon as they come on screen, quickly open the menu and use Abra's Teleport to go to Cerulean City. If you see the ! above their head, you did it correctly. The game now thinks you're in a battle, even though you're not, which is what you need for this glitch to work.
3. Go back to Route 24 and find the Youngster with a level 17 Slowpoke. He should be shortly after Nugget Bridge, facing "up" with a wall behind him, to the right of another Youngster facing "down". Try to avoid any other battles (I don't know if it affects anything, but better safe than sorry). Growl at the Slowpoke until it doesn't do anything anymore, then defeat it.
4. Go back to Cerulean City and the menu will pop up. Cancel out of the menu and you'll get into a battle with a wild level 1 Mew. Just like before, catch it and then get it fewer than 59 XP to make it level up straight to 100. Nice job!
