Because this is the way my life goes
Q&A for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
Q: What's the best Spirit?
A: The best anything will obviously depend somewhat on personal preferences, but the Ryu Dragon seems to be at the top of most people's lists, mainly because it's one of the few spirits that can teach you the awesome spell Mega Flare, as well as being decent in its own right. Plus, if you have the 3DS version (as opposed to the HD remake), you can get one at the beginning of the game if you abuse AR Card Spirits. Boukun Rex is another good one, which also teaches Mega Flare, coincidentally enough.
Q: Are there any other Keychains in the game other than the ones you get as part of the story?
A: Yes, there are four. Sweet Dream, which is obtained by completing all Flick Rush tournaments; End of Pain, obtained by completing all Special Portals; Overdrive, obtained by completing all Secret Portals; and Ultima Weapon, obtained by defeating Julius.
Q: How do I fight Julius?
A: After finishing the game, go to the Fountain Plaza in Traverse Town to automatically initiate the fight. Be warned: Julius is not an easy foe. It's recommended to be at least level 50 and have some decent abilities (Balloonra is a godsend in this fight) before attempting to fight him.
Q: Wait, don't you mean Balloonga?
A: Nope. Curiously enough, Balloonra actually does more damage to Julius than Balloonga, especially if all the balloons hit him, which is easy considering his large size.
Q: Who is this Julius... thing anyway?
A: Julius is a character from the Mickey Mouse short film Runaway Brain, released in 1995.
Q: Man, Flick Rush is annoying. Are there any good strategies?
A: Basically, Mega Flare is your best friend. You should ideally have two Spirits who can use Mega Flare (you can check this by going to "Change Party" in the Flick Rush menu after selecting a tournament) and one that can use Elixir. Put the Elixir user third. When the enemy attacks (indicated by an orange number appearing above them), block their attack (slide the card down on the 3DS, or press the Square button on the PS4) and if your block was successful, the card you used to block with (or the first card, if you stacked your defense cards, which is recommended in later tournaments) will transform into Mega Flare. Mega Flare may not seem to do much damage at first glance, but it actually damages all your opponents, not just the one you're currently fighting, making it very useful. Once both of your Mega Flare users run out of cards, switch to your Elixir user and use Elixir (the same way you used Mega Flare) to reload your cards and continue the assault. Stacking the Mega Flare with other cards is helpful in later tournaments.
Q: How do these Link Portals work?
A: There are three types of Portals. Battle Portals randomly appear in worlds and have you fight against a group of regular enemies. Special Portals randomly appear in fixed locations and have you battle stronger/rare versions of regular enemies. Secret Portals are always there, always in the same place, and have you battle a stronger version of that world's boss.
There are six Special Portals in a world for each character, with the sixth appearing after the first five are completed. Completing all the Special Portals with one character rewards you with the End of Pain Keychain for that character. Only one Special Portal will be open in a world at one time, and which one is open changes every time you Drop.
In order to check which Special Portal is open, look at the bottom screen on the 3DS when selecting a world, or on the PS4, press Triangle (the "Drop" button) when selecting a world. You'll see a screen with information underneath it, such as "Heavyweight hulk sighted!". (Note for PS4 users: This is which Special Portal is open NOW, not which Special Portal will be open after you Drop.) If the picture shows a question mark over static, it means that Special Portal has not been completed yet. All Portals can be challenged any number of times.
Q: Do I need to complete these optional objectives for Link Portals?
A: No, and usually it's not even worth it, since they give pretty pathetic rewards (usually food or training toys for your Spirits, all of which can be bought from Moogle shops).
Q: What's the best way to get Link Points?
A: The Water Barrel gets loads of LP really easily. Play a few rounds of Water Barrel with your Spirits and you'll rack up those LP in no time.
Q: Is there a good way to level up quickly?
A: There are probably several, but the one I found works very well, though it does require a bit of preparation.
You will need the Spirits Ryu Dragon, Boukun Rex and Kiba Tiger. Their ingredients can be obtained from various Link Portals, or other Spirits. Once you have them, you need to learn the following abilities: Mega Flare from both Ryu Dragon and Boukun Rex (so you have two), and EXP Up from Kiba Tiger.
Once you've got all of these, go to the Tower area in Symphony of Sorcery and let the Nightmares there beat you up until you're in HP Critical status. Then, use Mega Flare twice to eliminate the enemies. Exit into the Tower Entrance, then come back out and repeat the process. Combo Leave and
Last Leave help serve as extra insurance to avoid the Nightmares outright killing you.
Q: How do I get those abilities?
A: From Spirits, of course. Combo Leave can be obtained from Dragon Modoki, Hanadawannyan and Boukun Rex, and Last Leave can be obtained from Aura Lion, Denden Cargot, Kingda Nyan, Vacances Seal and Zou Elephant.
Q: What's a good ability to make the early game easier?
A: Zero Gravigun, by far, especially when combined with a Thunder spell. You can obtain it from Magic Rabbit. The most basic recipe for creating one is 4 Fleeting Figment + 2 Dulcet Fantasy. Fleeting Figment is dropped by Denden Cargot, Tsuno Kabuto, Idaten Kirin, Mimi Bunny and Elec-Unicorn. Idaten Kirin can be encountered in Special Portals in Traverse Town for Sora and Riku (look for "Zippy zapmeister sighted!"). Dulcet Fantasy can be obtained from Sora and Riku's first four Special Portals in La Cité des Cloches with a 33% chance each.
