How about some pointless trivia about One Piece?
The working title for the series was Romance Dawn, which was used as the title for the first chapter and volume of the manga. Also, originally there was no treasure - Luffy became a pirate simply for the thrill of adventure.
In an early draft submitted to Shonen Jump, Luffy's grandfather was the one who gave Luffy the Gomu Gomu no Mi. However, this may have been a deliberate deception by Eiichiro Oda in order to keep Shanks a secret. This draft also featured a female swordswoman named Ann, who looked similar in design to Nami, though she didn't join Luffy's crew. The villain of the draft was a pirate captain named Rokkaku no Spiel, who to this day is the only One Piece character to ever use actual magic (having the ability to ride on a broomstick, set people on fire, summon a hammer and control water).
In the first draft, another female Nami-like character named Silk was introduced, who did end up joining Luffy's crew in the epilogue. The villain this time was also a pirate captain, named Mikazuki no Galley, who also ended up joining Luffy's crew. Galley made a cameo in volume 902 of the manga, in a scene in Baratie. This first draft was later remade as the One Piece: Romance Dawn Story OVA. The anime-only character Mikazuki no Gally, who appears in the filler portions of the Loguetown arc, was also based on Galley.
Roronoa Zoro was originally written as one of Buggy's bodyguards.
Sanji was originally named Naruto, but Shonen Jump told Oda to change the name because they were pushing for the manga Naruto (which was just starting out at that point) to become a series.
In the series, Whitebeard's real name is Edward Newgate, while Blackbeard's real name is Marshall D. Teach. If you put Whitebeard's first name and Blackbeard's last name together, you get the real-life Blackbeard's (supposed) real name, Edward Teach. Also, the real-life Blackbeard occasionally used the alias "Thatch", which is referenced in this series with the character named Thatch, the commander of the 4th division of the Whitebeard Pirates whom Blackbeard murdered in order to obtain the Yami Yami no Mi.
Oda has said that the discovery of one of Blackbeard's ships was what inspired him to write a story about pirates.
The series was originally only supposed to run for five years, but it kept going simply because Oda really enjoys writing it.
One pertinent belief among the fanbase (mostly due to fansubs) is that the word "nakama" (often used in the series) carries certain connotations which make it impossible to be translated faithfully into any other language without losing said connotations. However, this is false - the word can easily be translated. The most direct translation is "comrades", but it can also be translated as "friends", "crewmates", or any synonym.
Oda has said that his favourite characters are Luffy, Gimon and Buggy.
Despite being named "Whitebeard", the character only has a moustache, not a beard. This is due to translation - his Japanese name is "Shirohige", where "hige" can refer to any type of facial hair. It was translated as "Whitebeard" to match his counterpart, Blackbeard (Kurohige), who does have a beard.
Roronoa Zoro was named after real-life pirate François l'Olonnais and folk hero Zorro. His name had to be changed to Zolo in the 4KiDS dub, due to copyright issues.
When FUNimation got the license after 4KiDS lost it, they initially wanted Luffy to be dubbed by a male voice actor, but both Toei and Oda himself wanted them to use a female.
Nami was originally going to use an axe to fight, rather than a staff. One of her early designs also had her with scars and a cybernetic-looking left arm and right foot.
Marguerite (one of the Kuja tribe on Amazon Lily) was originally going to have a Devil Fruit called "Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Black Cat", which would have made her look like a catgirl when transformed.
Robin was originally going to have an attack named "Face Fleur", where she would duplicate her face. It was rejected because it looked really creepy.
In response to a fan question, Oda confirmed that Luffy's genitals are indeed also made of rubber, since the Devil Fruit affects his whole body.
Mr. 2 Bon Kurei was originally named Mr. Happy Birthday, and he originally had a female partner named Miss Obon. In the final version of the story, Mr. 2, as a crossdresser, has both a male and female identity, and therefore is his own female partner. (His name is often misspelled as "Bon Clay", even in official translations, but Oda has confirmed that it's actually "Bon Kurei", a reference to a specific night in the Japanese Obon festival. In the manga, his fighting style was named "Okama Way" ("okama" meaning "crossdresser" in Japanese), but it was changed to "Ballet Kenpo" in the anime due to Toei's censorship.
