I don't think that I told you I'd wait for you forever.

A glossary of terms relating to erotic hypnosis and BDSM. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, but never got around to it until now. So here we go. I'm just writing these as they come to mind, there's no particular order to them.

BDSM - Often said to stand for "Bondage Dominance Sado-Masochism", formed by combining the acronyms B&D, D&S and S&M.

B&D - Bondage & Dominance or Bondage & Discipline. A form of dominance in which the submissive is "punished" by being tied up or bound in some way.

D&S - Dominance & Submission. Often written D/s. Denotes a relationship between two people in which one dominates the other in various ways.

S&M - Sadism & Masochism, sometimes shortened to SM (Sado-Masochism). A form of Dominant/submissive play in which the Dominant inflicts physical pain on the submissive in order to make the submissive feel aroused.

Dominant - The one in control in a D/s relationship, often shortened to Dom (or Domme for females). Other terms such as Master/Mistress, Top, Big and Daddy are also commonly used, though often Dominants will invent their own titles that they wish to be referred to as.

Submissive - The opposite to a Dominant, the one who is controlled. Often shortened to sub. Slave, bottom, little and pet are also sometimes used, among others. A submissive into degradation and humiliation (particularly a female one) may use the term "slut" or "whore" to refer to herself in the context of being a submissive.

Switch - "The best of both worlds", a switch is a person who can be either Dominant or submissive depending on their mood. Sometimes written as S/switch (playing on the notion of writing Dominant terms with capital letters and submissive terms with small ones), though this is rarely seen.

Capped/uncapped - On irc.bondage.com, a "capped" nick (i.e. an IRC nickname/handle that begins with a capital letter) usually (but not always) indicates a Dominant, while an "uncapped" nick (a nick written entirely in lowercase, or beginning with a lowercase letter) indicates a submissive. Switches will often indicate whether they are in Dominant or submissive mode by changing their nicks from capped to uncapped or vice versa. (Note that this does not always apply, so you shouldn't assume a person is Dominant or submissive just because their name starts with or doesn't start with a capital letter).

Tist - Short for hypnotist (properly written 'tist with an apostrophe, though most people leave the apostrophe out), a person who hypnotises others.

Trance/Trancing/Tranced - As a verb, "to trance someone" means to hypnotise someone. "Trancing" can mean either "hypnotising" or "being hypnotised", depending on context. "Tranced" means "hypnotised" as an adjective or a past participle (i.e. someone being described as "tranced" would mean they were currently under hypnosis). "Getting (or being) tranced" is also sometimes used to mean "being hypnotised". Essentially, "trance" is just a slang way of saying "hypnotise".

Room trance - An occasion where a hypnotist does a hypnosis session with the entirety of a room on irc.bondage.com. These are only done in certain rooms and usually only by the Ops (Operators) in the room, or by other people with the permission of the Ops. Many hypnosis-themed rooms on irc.bondage.com (and other IRC servers) do not allow hypnosis to occur in the main room for safety reasons.

Collars - On irc.bondage.com, people will often denote their status as submissive in a D/s relationship by adding the name or initials of their Dominant at the end of their name, surrounded by square or curly brackets, which is referred to as a collar. Sometimes mutual collaring will occur, with the Dominant also wearing a collar of their respective submissive, though this usually indicates a "switch relationship" (where the two parties will often switch roles). The difference between square brackets and curly brackets is widely debated and many have different theories of what exactly it is.

Mutual trancing - A form of hypnosis in which the two parties hypnotise each other at the same time. "Trance battle" is a more competitive form of this, in which the two parties compete to see who can put the other under first.

Group trance/Group hypnosis - A hypnosis session done with a small group of people. Different to a room trance in that this often still happens in private conversations.

ABDL - Short for Adult Baby Diaper Lover, a form of fetish in which a grown person (male or female) takes on the role and behaviour of a baby or infant, including wearing nappies/diapers, using a dummy/pacifier and often having someone take care of them like a real baby (including feeding and changing them). Often combined with hypnosis to make the individual more dependent on diapers (i.e. incontinence training), among other things.

Regression - Using hypnosis to mentally "regress" a subject to a young age, typically a small child, though sometimes also a teenager. On IRC and other chat sites, those that are regressed will often (though not always) communicate in stereotypical "baby talk", such as replacing Rs and Ls with Ws and so on.
