Pointless trivia time about everyone's favourite indie horror game, Five Nights at Freddy's.

The game's creator, Scott Cawthon, took inspiration for the game from criticisms towards one of his earlier games, a family-friendly game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. Internet reviewers claimed that the game's characters looked like creepy animatronics. This initially caused Scott to go into a deep depression, and he almost quit making games entirely, but then he decided that he could make something a lot scarier, and so Five Nights at Freddy's was born.

Scott has said that the only animatronic in the game he truly finds scary is Bonnie. He apparently had several nightmares about Bonnie while creating the game.

Chica is actually a chicken, despite many people referring to her as a duck.

The disturbing laugh that plays whenever Freddy moves from one room to another is the slowed down recording of a little girl giggling. The unedited sound clip can be heard if the player views the Golden Freddy poster through the camera.

Golden Freddy can be encountered if the player views a poster with his face on it through the cameras. If the player then lowers the camera, Golden Freddy will be sitting in the room, and the player will experience hallucinations in the form of flashes of Freddy's face and the words "IT'S ME!" before the screen will fill with Golden Freddy's face and the game will crash. In order to avoid this, the player must quickly pull up the tablet again and switch to monitoring a different location on the cameras. Golden Freddy (identified in the first game's files as "Yellow Bear" - it wasn't until the second game when "Golden Freddy" became the official name) was intended as nothing more than a random Easter Egg, with Scott himself even admitting that he couldn't explain where it came from. It's thought that, since Golden Freddy seems to appear out of nowhere, and unlike the other animatronics has no reflection in the monitors, that it is in fact merely a hallucination.

The "Bite of '87" is an incident alluded to by Phone Guy on the first night of the first game, but not much information is given aside from a remark that it's amazing a human can live without the frontal lobe. Theories are that one of the animatronics actually bit someone, most likely a customer, and that customer lost their frontal lobe as a result. The most likely suspect is Foxy, due to him having rather sharp teeth, which could be the reason why Foxy's area, the Pirate Cove, is marked as out of order. However, this was disconfirmed when the second game was released, as Foxy was revealed to be already out of order before the Bite happened, and the most likely suspect now is Mangle.

During the minigames that you occasionally play after dying in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, a robotic voice can be heard repeating letters in the background. These heavily distorted letters actually spell out a message - "SAVE THEM", "SAVE HIM" or "HELP THEM", depending on which game you're playing.

Scott's kids actually helped design Foxy, which explains why Foxy is easily the least scary (appearance-wise) out of the four animatronics in the first game.

Scott Cawthon himself voices Phone Guy. He even refers to the character as "Phone Guy" himself, adapting it as the character's official name.

It has been theorised that the game actually takes place in Australia, since despite the second game taking place in November, Phone Guy explicitly says "Welcome to your new summer job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza". November is a summer month in the southern hemisphere, and the in-game currency is dollars, which is also the currency in Australia. However, Phone Guy still speaks with an American accent. It could also be explained as "summer job" being an idiom meaning "part-time, temporary, minimum wage job", rather than a job that literally takes place during the summer.

In the game's backstory, there was an incident where five children went missing at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Reportedly, a man dressed up as one of the animatronics, lured five children backstage, murdered them and stuffed their corpses inside the animatronics. Soon after, the animatronics began to give off a foul stench like rotting corpses, and blood and mucus could be seen oozing from the animatronics' eyes. The creator of the games has claimed the animatronics are haunted, most likely possessed by the ghosts of the dead children. It was theorised for a long time that the suit the murderer wore was the Golden Freddy suit, but in FNaF 2, one of the minigames has you playing as the Puppet, surrounded by four children, with the phrase "Give Gifts" at the bottom of the screen and the words "HELP THEM" being spelled out in the background. Once you give presents to each of the four children, the message at the bottom changes to "Give Life", and you must again approach the four children, after which an animatronic head will appear on each of them. When you have done all four children, Golden Freddy's head will fly out at you, similar to his kill screen. However, if you look closely, you can see a fifth child appear in the middle of the room, right where Golden Freddy's head comes out. This seems to imply that the fifth child was stuffed into the Golden Freddy suit. The third game in the series confirms that Springtrap was the suit worn by the murderer, and is still possessed by his spirit.

When Scott created the game, he initially thought that the so-called 4/20 mode - i.e. Custom Night during the first game with all animatronics' AI levels set to 20, the highest possible difficulty level - was impossible. When Twitch Let's Player Bigbugz pulled it off, Scott added a third star to the title screen as a reward for doing what he himself could not do. (The first star is for beating the first five nights, the second is for beating the very difficult sixth night.)

The trailer for the first game showed Bonnie running down the hallways, and also showed a scene of Bonnie removing his face to reveal the endoskeleton beneath. Neither of these things happened in the actual game, though the ability to run was instead given to Foxy, and in FNaF 2 Bonnie's face is missing entirely.

On Night 5 on the first game, when you listen to the phone call, you hear a creepy distorted voice. Reversing the sound clip reveals that the voice (presumably Freddy's) is actually quoting from Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. The quote is from a scientist, who talks about his theory that animals, plants and metals all share a similar life force.

And just to seal the deal, the strange whispering you sometimes hear? If you run it through the same process as the others, you hear the line from the door start and devolve into further distortion. If you filter out the sound of the original quote, then re-reverse it, you hear, "Turn around the sound, and then the sucker shifts direction from what the original was doing. That should mess 'em up." This could be a reference to the fifth night, in which the animatronics' movements are mirrored.

Phone Guy has been theorized to have had something to do with the murders, especially after the second game seemed to hint that he was the Murderer himself. However, the third game pretty firmly debunks this possibility with the Murderer's death depicted in the Bad Ending; not only did he NOT die cornered in the security guard office like Phone Guy did, he died after the first game while Phone Guy was seemingly killed before it even started. Though, considering various factors (the malfunctioning facial recognition could just be the Murderer having programmed it to see everyone but himself as himself, Golden Freddy has a rather major connection to him, etc.) it's entirely possible he didn't die that night, thus leaving this up in the air and more confusing than ever.

Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy's names were supposed to be placeholder nicknames, but Scott eventually grew fond of them and kept them in the final game.

During one of Phone Guy's calls in the first game, he theorises that playing dead might make the animatronics leave you alone. If the power runs out, the doors will open, the lights will turn off, and Freddy will stand outside the left door, playing his song (which is actually "Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre" from Carmen, commonly known as the Toreador Song). When the song ends, Freddy will remain silent for a few seconds before pouncing on you and killing you. The length of time the song plays, as well as the length of silence, is random. However, remaining perfectly still (not moving the mouse, not doing anything) will increase the length of the song and silence, so it turns out playing dead really does help.

The second and third games reveal that the reason the animatronics attack you is because a security guard was the one who murdered the five children. The animatronics (especially Freddy) tried to stop him from doing so, but were unable to. This, combined with their limited facial recognition and possibly being haunted by the children's ghosts lead them to resent security guards. With this in mind, it actually means that Freddy and the animatronics are the good guys, and the reason they attack you is because they think you're evil.
