Coldness, darkness, no sound, feel no pain

Pointless trivia about Persona 4.

A few of the party members went through some changes in the development of the game. Rise was originally going to be an actual party member, rather than support, and would have been remarkably different - her original incarnation was an "ice queen"-type delinquent who wielded a chain. In the final game, the delinquent role went to Kanji, and Rise was reworked into an idol when her appearance was changed to look more like her Japanese voice actor. Kanji was originally going to be a middle-aged man, and Naoto would have been straight up male, as opposed to a female crossdresser. (Which makes you wonder what her Shadow encounter would have been like if that had happened...)

Speaking of Kanji, his sexuality (whether he's attracted to men, women, or both) is deliberately left ambiguous throughout the game. Troy Baker, his English voice actor, revealed in an interview that he was instructed to portray Kanji as if he were gay, and firmly believes that he is, but the game's creators have stated that Kanji's sexuality is up to the player to decide.

Erin Fitzgerald, the new voice actor for Chie from Persona 4 Arena onwards, basically said the same thing, admitting she portrayed Chie as being "madly in love" with Yukiko after reading the script for Persona 4 Golden. Though if this were canon, it would make Chie bisexual, since she is able to become the male protagonist's girlfriend in the game.

And speaking of which, it was originally possible for Yosuke to become the male protagonist's lover. No kidding. Though this option was ultimately left out of the final game, remnants of it can still be seen - apart from all the rather suggestive dialogue with Yosuke in some of his Social Link events, Yosuke is the only male character whose Social Link events change subtly depending on player actions - something that happens with all the dateable female Social Link characters, but none of the others. Though given how homophobic Yosuke originally is, it's ironic that it was him of all people who was selected to be the gay option.

It was originally planned for the killer to be none other than Dojima, with Adachi serving as the red herring (instead of Namatame). The concept was scrapped for being way too dark for the type of game they wanted Persona 4 to be. Yosuke and Yukiko were also considered as the killer at points, but the writers felt like their motivations (self-pleasure) were too weak and cliché.

During a scene after rescuing Yukiko, Yosuke says something like "It's not like the killer would be wearing a bright yellow jacket at the scene of the crime." This is a joke in reference to how the original concept art for the killer depicted them wearing a bright yellow raincoat.

In the Japanese version of Persona 4 Golden, Adachi's Social Link Arcana was Lust, taken from the Thoth deck (it's basically the Thoth equivalent of Strength). It was changed to Hunger in the English version to avoid English-speaking players misinterpreting its meaning (they might have thought it meant that Adachi was lusting after the protagonist, when it was really supposed to be something akin to "lust for life").

In the Japanese version, the Midnight Channel is called Mayonaka Televi, literally Midnight TV. Junes's slogan/jingle was changed from "Every day, young life, Junes!" to "Every day's great at your Junes!" because the original was a bit Engrishy.

Rise's nickname was changed from Risecchi (basically a "cuter" way of saying Rise-chan) to Risette.
