Time for me to shine

Want another pointless trivia? Well, too bad, you're getting one anyway. This one's going to be about Sonic the Hedgehog again, mostly Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania.

The original title of Sonic Mania was Sonic Discovery. The name Sonic Mania was suggested by head of Sonic Team, Iizuka Takashi himself, who felt the game was made "for the mania, by the mania".

The Drop Dash, the new ability for Sonic/Classic Sonic in both games, is based on a glitch from the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which allows Sonic to charge up a Spin Dash in midair and release it when he hits the ground.

In Sonic Mania, after defeating Weather Globe, the boss of Act 2 of Studiopolis Zone, the TV screen in the background displays a "technical difficulties" screen (actually the BBC's test screen, but with Eggman replacing the girl and clown in the original) as a persistent buzzing sound is heard. This is a reference to the infamous Sonic 25th anniversary livestream, which was plagued by technical difficulties, including the exact same buzzing noise which was prominent throughout the entire demonstration. The numbers "072216" can be seen in the bottom right corner of the screen, meaning July 22, 2016, the date of the livestream in question.

Studiopolis Zone was originally going to be renamed, as the developers hadn't realised that Studiopolis, Inc. was the name of the company responsible for the English dubbing of Sonic the Hedgehog games. Fame Plaza Zone and Opening Night Zone were considered, but then Studiopolis, Inc. approved the original name.

Mirage Saloon Zone was based on the scrapped ideas of Dust Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Desert Dazzle from the 2011 remake of Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

According to the in-game manual, two of the Hard-Boiled Heavies, namely Heavy Magician and Heavy Rider, are female.

The giant Moto Bug that Heavy Rider rides is named Jimmy, which is a reference/tribute to Polygon Jim, who created a ROM hack called Motobug the Badnik in Sonic the Hedgehog, in which Sonic is replaced by a slow-moving Moto Bug who, just like Heavy Rider's Moto Bug, needs to use a telescopic wheel to jump. Polygon Jim passed away in 2013, so Heavy Rider's Moto Bug was named in memoriam.

In the video game Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the player can discover an Easter egg in the form of a game within a game entitled Knuckles the Echidna in Knuckles & Knuckles & Knuckles. Sonic Mania references this (and the "& Knuckles" meme in general) with the unlockable "& Knuckles" mode, which adds an AI-controlled Knuckles (similar to how Tails behaves in Sonic & Tails mode) as a partner. This even works when controlling Knuckles himself, and completing the game this way with all the Chaos Emeralds unlocks a secret ending (and is the only way to access Egg Reverie Zone and fight Phantom King and Klepto Mobile with a character other than Sonic outside of using the level select).

As of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, SEGA have confirmed that the Classic and Modern Sonic games are separate timelines, meaning Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic are not the same character from different times, but two separate versions of the character from two alternate timelines. In other words, the events of the classic games never happened to Modern Sonic, and Classic Sonic's future will be entirely different from that of Modern Sonic's (which puts Sonic's comment of "Enjoy your future! It's gonna be great!" at the end of Sonic Generations in a whole new light).

One of the very early concepts for Sonic Mania's story was that Eggman, after his defeat in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, would have become depressed and retire, and the Hard-Boiled Heavies would have been a squad of elite Eggrobos who went rogue.

Act 1 of Press Garden Zone was originally supposed to have more ink-related gimmicks, including coloured inkwells that would dye the character a different colour if they fell in, and printers which would teleport ink-covered characters to specific locations.

Heavy Shinobi, his boss battle, and the music accompanying it (referred to as "Hi-Spec Robo Go!" on the soundtrack) are references to the Shinobi series by SEGA.
